Watton-at-Stone is a village just north of the county town of Hertford, some 20 miles north of London. The village lies on the banks of the River Beane in gentle folding hills.

History

Roman sites have been found in and around the village which is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. In 1200, the manor of Watton was held by Henry Fitz Ailwin, the first Lord Mayor of London. In more recent times, Sir Nigel Gresley, the great steam locomotive designer, spent the last few years of his life at Watton House. A closer look at village life and more detailed history is contained in the Village Guide.
